Inspiring live sessions p2
The Family Crest, “Howl” Live At Audiotree - If you’ve seen The Family Crest live, you know their concerts are high energy to say the least, and that energy peaks when they pull out this tune. Suddenly you and the whole crowd are transported back a hundred years to the roaring 20’s, fueled by prohibited liquor and the deep-seated urge to belt out a howl at the moon. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fsnW0bOupl4
Phoebe Bridgers Tiny Desk Concert - Phoebe Bridgers is an emo angel. Her songs bring comfort to those in the depths of depression, not by pandering to them with imagery of a sun that doesn’t shine for them, but by letting them know they’re not alone. Her crystal clear voice shines through the darkness like a light at the end of the tunnel, and her powerful lyrics wrap around you like wings sheltering you from the storm. I listen to her Tiny Desk performance whenever I need a reminder that there is beauty in the world. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-hLJNZSIwP8
Cody Fry feat. Cory Wong & Dynamo, “Want Me Back” - This session sets the bar for video, sound, performance, and arrangement quality. It also utilizes some Scott Pilgrim-esque editing techniques, so if you’re a fan of that movie be sure to check this one out. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cYELx5Zuj2M
Elise Trouw, Foo Fighters Bobby Caldwell Mashup - If you frequent YouTube for music, there’s a fair chance you might have been one of the 14 million views on this video. Elise Trouw is one of the most well known live loopers, building a song from scratch by playing each part individually. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gl9GtO_vQxw
Julia Jacklin, “Don’t Know How To Keep Loving You” at Paste Studios - This song is an incredibly intimate lamentation of the slow death of a relationship, and this live performance brings you face to face with the shattered remains of Julia’s broken heart. It’s the kind of performance that stops you dead in your tracks and makes you wonder, “What do I do now?” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N9TT5kO4p7Q
Dodie, “Monster” at Vevo DSCVR - Vevo DSCVR takes bedroom pop star Dodie out of the bedroom and into their unique live session set, where she shines with her performance of her original tune “Monster.” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RdI8sH_e14s
Gone West, “What Could’ve Been (Acoustic)” - It’s not often a pop star joins a band after they become famous for their solo work, but that’s what happened to great effect when Colbie Cailait started Gone West with her fiance Justin Young and their friends Jason Reeves and Nelly Joy. Although this is an acoustic version of their song “What Could’ve Been,” it’s anything but sparse, with 4 singers, two guitars, a piano, and a mandolin. The result is a beautiful, shimmering, natural wall of sound. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f7114F2xtnY
Scary Pockets feat. Maiya Sykes, “Viva La Vida” - If Coldplay is a little vanilla for you, just wait till you hear Maiya Sykes belt out this soulful funk cover of Viva La Vida. You’ll never hear it the same way. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JP3nskD7ebU
